I’ve been writing about ritual for a few weeks now, essay after essay. Lately, when appropriate, I’ve started pulling the framework out of each piece once it’s done. The essay makes the argument. The framework makes it portable.

This one came out of Not Every Return Is the Same.

Here’s the part worth keeping. Compulsion, habit, and ritual are indistinguishable from the outside. Same cadence. Same form. You return at the same time, in the same way, to the same thing. The repetition is identical across all three. What’s different is what compounds underneath it.

Compulsion compounds dependency. Habit compounds routine. Ritual compounds meaning, identity, and belonging. Three behaviors that look like twins, quietly building three completely different things.

The cleanest test is a slow one. Stand back and audit the practice across a full year, then ask what the person would actually say about it. Compulsion: “It cost me more than it gave.” Habit: “It was neither here nor there.” Ritual: “It improved my life.” The year tells you what the day can’t.

I’m sharing the one-sheeter in case it’s useful, whether you’re trying to build repetition into something or hoping a habit of yours might grow into a ritual. Either way, it’s worth knowing which one you’re actually making.

Same architecture. Different substance. Different outcomes.

The visualization frames the foundational forms. What it doesn’t yet show is the more interesting fact: most participation systems blend multiple shapes at once. A great brand or movement is usually two or three of these running in parallel.

Last week I published “Becoming Chinese,” about the trend that should have gotten cancelled but didn’t. Chinese creators invited the internet to adopt their daily practices, and the internet said yes. No accusations of appropriation. Something closer to communion.

Writing it, I realized the piece had a framework buried inside it. The line between cultural participation and cultural extraction isn’t intent. Everyone has good intent. The line is structure.

I wanted to see if I could map what that structure actually requires.

The diagnostic is where most brands fail. They design elaborate guest experiences for communities they want to reach without anyone to answer the door.

No hosts, no invitation. No invitation, no exchange. Just tourism with a media budget.

This one struck me because I have experience with a brand built on hosting in a completely different context. Yerba Madre (formerly Guayakí), the leading yerba mate brand, was founded on service and sharing. In the language of this framework, they were hosts long before they were marketers and it is a core reason why they have such a passionate community built around their product.
